An Account of the Life of John the Baptist

Christ said that there had "not risen a greater than John the Baptist," and yet there is not a book of the Bible that focuses specifically on John's ministry, and thus the information that we have on him is spread out across various scriptures. This chronological account attempts to blend the various historical records into one continuous chronological story, by combining accounts from Josephus and from the scriptures. Read it here.

The Biblical Means toward Joy: Solomon's Book of Ecclesiastes and the Study of Happiness

The pursuit of happiness did not begin with the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Man has looked for happiness throughout his existence. In his book of Ecclesiastes, the ancient king of Israel Solomon set out not only to find wisdom and the meaning of life but also to find joy, and this book can, thus, be read as a manual for finding pleasure. Read about the various tips Solomon proposed here.

Forgiveness: What the Bible Says It Is and Why It Is Important

If people refuse to apologize to us for a wrong they have committed, do we have to forgive them? How the Holy Spirit Is a Comforter

Christ said that that if he did not go away, the Comforter could not come. In fact, he promised that the Comforter would come if he went away. It's generally understood that this Comforter is the Holy Spirit, but why is the Holy Spirit called a comforter? An exploration of this topic appears here.

The Lesson of the Rechabites: Tabernacles and Mankind's Calling

In the last years of the ancient kingdom of Judah, God sent a prophet named Jeremiah to a family of nomads who had taken refuge in Jerusalem amid spreading war. One can read the story in Jeremiah 35. God told Jeremiah to bring the Rechabite family to the temple and to give the family members wine to drink. But the Rechabites, although they went to the temple, refused. Years earlier, they had taken a pledge neither to drink nor to take up permanent homes.

God, as it turned out, rather than honoring this family was testing it. And the family passed the test, and for this, God blessed it. One of the things the family members had pledged--that they would remain tent-dwelling pilgrims forever--has significance for all of God's people in general in that what was asked of them is what God has asked of his own people throughout the history of mankind. Throughout scriptures, God uses tents as a metaphor for man's dwelling and, more specifically, man's dwelling with him. Learn more here.

The Pure Language of the Kingdom of God

One day, God "will turn to the people a pure language," Zephaniah 3:9 notes, "that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent." Some take this scripture to mean that the whole world--all peoples--will be given a single new, "pure" language. And indeed, a new language is coming to the world, but it is something much more profound than simply a new set of words and symbols. It is something that goes to the essence of who people are and what they do, and it is something that one can begin to master at this time. Learn more here.

Unto the Pure All Things Are Pure

When Paul told Titus that all things are pure to those who are pure, was he then saying that those who are pure are justified to do anything? Is this some kind of claim that one's justification in Christ means that there is nothing--no action, no sin, no thought--that can separate one from the righteous status God has now imputed to the Christian? In fact, the answer to this question is grounded in other verses that explore this same topic. Read more here.

Being properly informed is essential to decision making. But when is "being properly informed" just an excuse for gossip? What can we learn from the experience of ancient Israel as its spies explored the Promised Land for the first time? How can we ensure that our own communication doesn't cross the line? Read what the Bible has to say here.

Who and What Is a Peacemaker?
