Why the Ten Commandments

Christians and others often reference the Ten Commandments. For many, these ten laws are essential guides to living, while for others, the laws are out of date, done away, replaced by a "law of Christ." Yet Christ himself referenced the Ten Commandments as a basis for the basic law of love that he himself preached (Matt. 19:16-21, 22:37-40), so the ten commands must play some kind of central role in Christian life. Although many regular Bible readers can quote the ten basic commandments, few really stop to ask why the Bible lists these particular ten commands. What follows is a list of scriptures and a short summary of what each scripture states that, I believe, may help clarify each commandment's purpose, as explained by the Bible itself.
